HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a common virus that affects most people at some point in their lifetime. Almost 200 different types of strains are found related to the HPV that are characterized on the basis of low to high risk. HPV strains with low risk do not cause any harm but can cause conditions like genital warts. Whereas, HPV strains with high risk can cause serious health problems like Cervical Cancers. In women, Cervical Cancer is considered to be the most common cancer, because most cervical cancers are caused to due to the Human papillomavirus (HPV).


The risk of HPV infection will remain at high risk in women, that most commonly includes Cervical cancers. Around 100 types of HPV strains have been identified to date, out of which approximately 15 virus strains are known to cause Cervical Cancer. Cervical Cancer is caused due by HPV types 16 and 18. The vaccines available for HPV infections can protect from various strains that can cause Cervical cancer.


Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death due to cancer in women, who are in their 20s and 30s. The HPV vaccine can help people protect from several other types of HPV infections that can cause cervical cancer and other types of cancer such as - Penis, Vaginal, anus, and mouth cancers. The first-ever vaccine which was developed protects from the types 16 and 18 of the HPV strains that cause Cervical cancer. Whereas the vaccines that are produced now protect from almost 9 types of HPV strains.

Vaccinations provided at the recommended age will be more beneficial to help prevent the widespread of cancer strains, than vaccination at older ages. The HPV administration has recommended an HPV vaccination age of 9-12 years, which will help to stabilize the stains at an early age. Also, vaccinating at an early age will also help in the prevention of Cervical Cancer Caused by HPV strains.


FDA has approved 3 types of HPV vaccines named - Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix that are available to protect from the infections. In the United States since 2016, Gardasil 9 is the only vaccine used against HPV infections. Whereas, 3 of them are commonly used in the United Kingdom. The companies manufacturing the vaccines are - Gardasil (Merck), Gardasil 9 (Merck), and Cervarix (gsk).
